Pick the right kind of light.
Indoor lights should only be used indoors and outdoor lights should only be used for outside. To be safe, you can purchase lights that are certified for indoor and outdoor usage
Choose the right cord.
Use an extension cords rated for outdoor use when stringing up lights on the porch or house. Indoor-use extension cords are not made to withstand cold or wet environments.
Keep the cord dry.
Make sure the junction where your cord and your extension cord meet stays dry. Damaged extension cords could cause injury, electrocution, or fire. You could plan your light display so that connections are suspended off the ground instead of sitting in contact with it.
Don’t make your lights a year-long attraction.
Sure, they are pretty, but do not leave your lights up for too long. Many lights, including smart lights, are not meant for long-term use. Be sure to check the light box for information on how long you can safely leave your lights up.
Be sure to light your home with LEDs and save on energy. LEDs are energy efficiencent and last 30 times longer than incandescent light bulbs.
