Residential Internet

Residential Internet service

For many people living in the Tohono O’odham Nation, residential internet service is a necessity. Kids may need the web to complete homework, and gaming. Adults might need reliable internet access to work at home. Elders can stay in touch like never before with video chat, and community members are able to come together online even when they’re far apart physically. The Tohono O’odham Utility Authority provides internet service to the Nation, helping our community stay connected. We offer a range of packages to provide our customers with internet service at home.

How to Establish Residential Internet Service

Applicants who would like to sign up for residential internet service with TOUA on property assigned to them must be 18 years old, and proof of age must be verified with identification such as a driver’s license, tribal identification, or a social security card. For new residential internet service applicants must also submit a district resolution that gives TOUA permission to provide ALL utility services. If you are requesting new residential internet service on land that is assigned to someone else, you’ll need to submit a notarized letter from the named land assignee that gives you permission to establish utility services with TOUA.

Understanding Internet Speeds

Choosing the right internet package requires evaluating cost and performance. While it might be tempting to go with the least expensive option available, you want to be sure you have an internet plan that suits your usage. You’ll need a connection that is fast enough to support all your devices (phones, computers, tablets, smart TVs, etc.) and the type of internet services you most commonly use.

The “speed” of the internet generally refers to how fast data can be uploaded or downloaded. Mbps means “megabits per second,” and it’s used as a standard measurement for upload/download speeds. The faster the mbps, the less time you spend waiting to connect. Slow internet speeds can cause websites to take a long time to load, and movies or videos may play back choppily. To determine the best internet package, it’s important to consider how many devices will be using the internet and how you generally use the web. Typically, usage is defined as light, moderate, or high:
Light
One or two devices connected, with most internet access for checking email, social media, and web browsing.
Moderate:
Three to five devices connected, with use ranging from checking email and social media to online gaming and high-definition video streaming.
High:
More than five devices connected, with use that includes email, social media, gaming, video streaming, uploading/downloading large files, and streaming live video.
