What Is Fiber Internet?

Fiber internet is a broadband connection enabled using fiber optic cables. Tiny optical fibers made of glass are about the same diameter as a human hair are bundled together to form cables. Fiber optics allow the transmission of information in the form of light rather than electricity. Fiber is considered to be more reliable, and is an excellent choice for telecommuters, gamers, and multi-user households.

Though many people think of fiber as new technology, it actually dates back to the 1970s when it was first used in telecommunications. In 1988, the switch from telephone service provided by Mountain Bell to telephone service provided by TOUA was made. By the years end, the department was poised to provide service with a modern system and fiber optic cable was installed from Sells to Quijotoa. That began the construction of over 65 miles of buried fiber optic in the year 1988.

Today TOUA has over 300 miles of buried fiber optic cable and over 75% of completed Fiber to the home to villages across the Tohono O’odham Nation. TOUA now serves over 1500 customers with fiber internet while the remaining 25% are served with copper. Our wireless network, deployed to 54 villages, is used to extend the reach of the network as fiber continures to be built out while also providing redundancy to our backhaul.

Benefits of Fiber Internet

Fiber Internet is a great choice for high-bandwith households where multiple users are online learning, streaming videos, and online gaming. A fiber connected home can deliver lag free internet service across all devices in the home.

Fiber is so reliable, that if technology requires speeds 100 times faster in 10 years our fiber can still support it.
