In 1964 the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) established the Washington Youth Tour to bring young people to Washington, D.C. to get a firsthand experience to see how the government works.

This is the first year we are sending students to represent TOUA since the Covid-19 pandemic. To be selected by TOUA, students must submit an essay and participate in an interview. Then, the students are selected to represent TOUA in an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for a week. Our students engage with other students from Arizona and students from across the country representing rural electric cooperatives.

Students that have been chosen are pictured: Xavier Mease – Baboquivari High School, Alisco Colazo-Villa – Cholla High School, David Conde – Baboquivari High School.

Throughout the week, students meet with elected officials, explore museums, visit historical monuments and develop friendships that last a lifetime! Youth Tour is about elevating students to the next level and it all happens in one week.

Congratulations to our students! Help us wish them safe travels and that they return full of ambition to be the next generation of executives for our sovereign nation, the Tohono O’odham Nation.

If you are a customer of TOUA, and have a student that is a High School Junior – he or she is qualified. For more information on the Washington Youth Tour, please contact Teresa Choyguha at (520) 383- 2236.
